Because his paternal Grandfather was Jewish, Mehmet was considered Zera Israel (Bani Israel in Arabic). He might have been identical with Iyas ibn Qabisa. He practiced Gnosticism and was married by Warakah to Khadijah before Warakah became a Nasrani. In later life people said that Mehmet practiced as a Gnostic (Hanif) in the caves of Al-Hira where he had met Khalifah Gabriel al-Kalbi who convinced him to become a NoahiteGnostic.
