Pharisaical Judaism emerged in the Hellenic era and eventually became Romaniote Judaism as Judaism evolved into two kinds, Hillelite Essenes and Shammuti Zealots. Shammuti Zealotry fell by the wayside in the early 2nd century as did the Hillelite Essenes both remembered only by the Scribes and Pharisees. Hillelite Judaism was more Esoteric while Shammuti Judaism was more Exoteric. While Hillelite Judaism thrived in Central Europe, Shammuti attitudes survive among Maimonideans. In recent decades Maiminidean attitudes have taken over much of what remained of the post Holocaust Hillelite communities largely thanks to the Chabad Lubavitcher movement.

Pharisees must try to find the correct balance between the esoteric a exoteric and try to learn from both sides of the argument without taking sides. If everything were Esoteric, there would be no tijkun plan. If everything were exoteric then chesed would be oppressed.
