Subbotnik Jews are a type of Israeli Jew with Karaimite Jewish origins but who have opted to go through an Orthodox Giyur Lechumra without turning their backs on their Subbotnik heritage and have settled in Israel. They played a major role in the first Aliyah. They are distinct from Talmudist Subbotnik Gerei who reject their Subbotnik heritage in order to assimilate into Hassidic culture.
