Saul of Tarsus was a pharisee and a student of Gamaliel, of Benjaminite paternal lineage but belonged to the Synagogue of Freedmen presumably because his mother was one of the emancipated Idumean servants. At first he was violently opposed to the Jerusalem Synagogue, while Gamaliel is reported to have tollerated it. Something happened to Saul to change his mind, and he seems to have become known as Paul as a result. R. Jacob Emden maintained a good report concerning Saul/Paul.
