يهود

The Yahwedo are Christian Gnostics who say they are Jews (Alazeena Haadu) but are not. They believe they are sons of God called "Uthra/Uzayir" ibn Allah. They live under the guidance of the Ichvara priesthood.

They are not to be confused with Jews in the Quran who never pronounce the name of G-d.

Etymology

The root of the word Yahūdi (يهودي) is to "delay" or "pause". A هودا or Hoodan (singular) from this same root is a "Delayer" (singular) and the Yahūdu (اليهود) are the "Delayers" (plural). The following is the linguistic analysis of this root in Arabic:

i.e. Al-Tahweedu, Al-Tahwaadu, and Al-Tahawwudu: is the delay in walking, leniency, or gentleness depending on the context. While it is possible to imagine the meaning to be mild/lenient/gentle/hesitant with regards to their faith i.e. lapsed, luke-warm, insincere and lacking commitment/conviction, in fact the relevant sense (Delay) is illustrated in the Hadith of Imran ibn Husain in which he instructed his people: "When I die, hurry up with my body to the burial and do not delay (Tuhawwidu) like the delaying of the Yahūd (delayers) and the Netzarim (from נֹצְרִים or "nōṣərim" meaning "watchers", a Messianic Samaritan group with origins dating back to Jeremiah 4:16, and 31:6)!" In Arabic:

Indeed it is known that the Jews do not delay when it comes to burial as they are required to bury on the same day.

The form: Yahūdi may be derived from the root as follows: Hawada, transformed to Haada (delayed/ repented): Yahwudu transformed to Yahūdu (1-to delay/ 2-to repent and act righteously: and here the two opposite meanings of the root word Haad take the same linguistic structure YAHUDU): However at the level of the noun in the Holy Quran they differ: he is Yahwudi transformed to Yahūdi = a Delayer; and he is a Haa'id = repenting and acting righteously; hence: Alazeena Haadu in the Holy Quran = the Torah observing Jews . According to this analysis, the Yahūdi (singular)/Yahūd (plural) refer to the ones who delay the repentance or the return to the Truth. NB this is contrary to Alazeena Haadu.

This etymology is based on the dictionaries:

(Lisan El-Arab) collected by Ibn Mandhor

and

(Alsihah Fi Allughah) collected by Al-Jawhary.

Note well that it is a mistake to equate Delayers with Hebrews because the Quran makes it clear that Abraham was not a Delayer (يهوديا) while the Torah makes it clear that he who became Abraham was indeed a Hebrew (Genesis 14:13). This brings us onto a certain element which deserves a small discussion. The Prophet Hūd هود (PBUH) mentioned for example in 26.124 is usually identified as Eber, the eponymous ancestor of all the Hebrews is from a different root meaning to that of the Delayers; Hūd is a name that means: glory, splendor, nobilty, and honour. Therefore, the etymological root of Prophet Eber's Arabic name Hūd (PBUH) is from "Repentance and Righteousness", not from "Delay".

It may be that many generations after Prophet Eber, the Hebrews had deviated from the deen of Noah and that because of this deviation some of them came to be confused with the Delayers. Anyway it is certain that Abraham was sent as a messenger to the Hebrews as they were his own people, indeed Abraham was called a Hebrew, but not all of the Hebrews followed him as their new teacher. At least we know that equating prophet Hūd (PBUH) and the Hebrews with the Delayers is an oxymoron because as already stated, the Quran itself says that he who became Abraham was not a Delayer (يهودي) while the Torah does call him a Hebrew which certainly warns us that the etymology of Hud and Delayers are not to be related.

Derogatory term

It is interesting to note that Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) does not even apply the term Yahūd to those mentioned in the Holy Quran 4:46 as a deviant minority, few of whom really believe, or even the "Ger Sheker" minority "سماعون للكذب أكالون للسحت" i.e. "greedy for illicit gain" (Quran 5:42) from among Alazeena Haadu, possibly because the minority being discussed in 4:46 even yet includes a few believers, thereby excluding the possibility of applying the truly negative term Yahūd.

Tirmidhi Chapter 29 About one who calls another a mukhannath (1467)

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated; The Prophet (SAW) said, “If anyone calls another person, 0 Delayer’ then give him twenty stripes. If he calls the other, ‘O mukhannath’(see below*) then give him twenty st’ipes, And if anyone commits adultery with a mahram woman then kill him.” [Ibn e Majah 2568][*A mukhannath is the one ("male") who carries in his movements, in his appearance and in his language the characteristics of a woman. These characteristics may either be innate or out of immoral purposes].

(Tirmidhi 3267) The people said "Kill the Delayer" to Abdullah ibn Salaam. The use of the word here is a clear evidence of incitement as well as a derogatory term.

(Tirmidhi 3920)

Sayyidina Anas reported that Sayyidah Safiyah (RA) had learnt that Sayyidah Hafsah commented (about her), ‘Daughter of a Yahūdi (Delayer).’ So, she wept, The Prophet (SAW) went to her and found her weeping. He asked her, ‘Why do you weep?” She said, “Hafsah says to me that lam the daughter of a Delayer.” The Prophet (SAW) said, “And you are the daughter of a Prophet and your uncle was a Prophet and you are in marriage with a Prophet. So, of what does she boast over you?” Then he said, “Fear Allah, O Hafsah!” [Ahmed 12395]. Daughter of a Prophet, i.e. Moses (PBUH)and your uncle is a Prophet, i.e. Aron (PBUH). This means that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH))described Sayyidah Safiyah, may Allah be pleased with her, as "Bint Israel" (daughter of Israel) and forbade Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her, to call her "daughter of a Yahūdi (Delayer)" because it is a derogatory term.

Used for Incitement

“And the Delayers say: Uzair is the son of Allah, and the Netzarim say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah (himself) fighteth against them. How perverse are they!” [ 9:30]

Ibn Kathir commented: "Allah the Exalted encourages the believers to fight the polytheists, disbelieving Delayers (commonly mistranslated as Jews) and Netzarim, who uttered this terrible statement and utter lies against Allah, the Exalted. As for the Delayers , they claimed that `Uzayr was the son of God, Allah is free of what they attribute to Him"[1]. Kathir's understanding of Quran 9.30 is that its whole purpose (whether true or not) is to incite the believers against the Delayers and Netzarim. In another position in his Tafseer he said: "Therefore, Muslims are not allowed to honor the people of Dhimmah or elevate them above Muslims, for they are miserable, disgraced and humiliated". It makes one wonder how it never reached him the saying of The Prophet (PBHH) that: “He who kills a Dhimmi will never smell the scent of Heaven even though its scent can be detected over the distance traversed in forty years” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]. He (PBUH) also said: “He who harms a Dhimmi (see below*) has indeed harmed me and will answer to me on the Day of Resurrection” [Kashf el-Khafa’a] . [* Dhimmi is a peaceful citizen living among the followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) according to Dhimmah, i.e. the covenant of peaceful co-existence, called Madinah Document/ Madinah Constitution).

Tirmidhi Chapter 110 (3829)

الظَّالِمِينَ }
{ قُلْ كَفَى بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ وَمَنْ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ الْكِتَابَ }

Abdul Malik ibn Umar reported on the authority of the nephew of Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Salaam (RA) that when people resolved to kill Sayyidina Uthman Abdullah ibn Salaam went to him. He asked, What is with you?” He said, “I have come to help you.” He said, “Go to the people and put them away from me, for, you are better for me outside than you are inside.” So, he went out to the people and said, “O people, my name during the Jahiliyah was so-and-so, but Allah’s Messenger named me Abdullah and verses of Allah’s Book were revealed about me. And, this vere was revealed about me: And a witness from among the children of lsra’il has already testified to its similarity (with earlier scripture) and has believed, while you are arrogant. Surely Allah guides not the evildoing people. (41 : 10) And, also: Say, Allah suffices as awitness between me and you, and whoso ever has with him knowledge of the book. (13 : 43) Allah’s sword is sheatled from you and the angels are your neighbours in this your city where Allah’s Messenger (SAW) had come. Allah! Fear Allah for this man whom you wish to kill. By Allah, if you kill him, your neighbouring angels will move away from you and Allah’s sword will be unsheathed against you never to be sheathed till the Day of Resurrection.” They said, “Kill the Yahūdi (Delayer) and kill Uthman.” This Hadith shows clearly that the respectful term to describe Abdullah ibn Salaam is "Ibn Israel", i.e. the son of Israel as mentioned in the Holy Quran; but when the enemies wanted to kill him, they incited that by calling him "Al-Yahūdi", the Delayer!

Cursed are the Delayers

There are two Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in which he said: "Qatala Allahu Al-Yahood" (May Allah destroy the Delayers) or "La'ana Allahu Al-Yahood" (May Allah curse the Delayers). The first Hadith is about selling the fats that Allah made unlawful in the Torah; and the second Hadith is about making the graves of the Prophets Masajid (plces of worship). Here are some of them: Tirmidhi 61.1301 حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيْعَ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْتَةِ وَالْخِنْزِيرِ وَالْأَصْنَامِ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ شُحُومَ الْمَيْتَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يُطْلَى بِهَا السُّفُنُ وَيُدْهَنُ بِهَا الْجُلُودُ وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِهَا النَّاسُ قَالَ لَا هُوَ حَرَامٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ الشُّحُومَ فَأَجْمَلُوهُ ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ

Sayyidina Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated that he heard Allah’s Messenger say in the year of conquest (of Makkah) while he was at Makkah, “Indeed, Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, dead animal, swine and idols.” Someone asked. ‘0 Messenger of Allah! What do you say about fat of dead animal, for it is used to coat and plate ships and anoint skins, and people light lamps with it.” He said, “No, that is unlawful.” He added thereafter, “May Allah destroy the Delayers! Allah made unlawful for them fat, they melted it and sold it and consumed its price.” [Bukhari 2236 Muslim 1581, Abu Dawud 3486, Nisai 4669, Ibn e Majah 2167, Ahmed 14479

Bukhari: Ibn Abbass (may Allah be with him) said that Umar was told that someone has sold alcohol; he (Umar) said: "May Allah destroy that person; didn't he know that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "May Allah destroy the Delayers! Fats were made unlawful for them, so they melted them and sold them". However, the same Hadith was reported by Al-Darimi through the same chain of ascription with a serious alteration: In this Hadith, the narrator, Mohamed ibn Ahmad said: ..."the Messeneger of Allah (PBUH) said: "May Allah curse the Delayers"..!! while the narrator of the former Hadith, Al-Humaydi said: ..."the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "May Allah destroy the Delayers"..!! The same alteration happened in the narration of the Hadith regarding the graves of prophets: In Sahih Muslim: حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَيْلِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ وَمَالِكٌ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ the narrator Haroon ibn Sa'eed with a chain up to Abu Hurairah said: the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "May Allah destroy the Delayers! they made the graves of their prophets Masajid (places of worship)". In the same Sahih (Muslim), the same Hadith was narrated by Qutaybah ibn Sa'eed with a chain up to Abu Hurairah: وَحَدَّثَنِي قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْفَزَارِيُّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "May Allah curse the Delayers and the Natzarim! they made the graves of their prophets Masajid (places of worship)". There are two questions here: What would the Prophet (PBUH) have said in these situations? Why the narrations differed like this? Shiekh El-Nayyal Abu Groon in his book: The All-Embracing Message of Islam said regarding the character of the Prophet (PBUH), which is the aim of the Message of Islam: Here, the Message shines brightly to illuminate its aim clearly, as the master Master of high moral qualities expounds:“Religion is interaction”. He exemplified this principle himself when his companions once asked him to lay a curse upon their persecutors (the mushrikeen), He (PBHH) replied: “I have not been sent to lay curses, but I have been sent as a mercy.” [Sahih Muslim]. Ibn Mas'uod said: "The believr (the faithful) is niether a back-biter, a curser, nor ......" Therefore, it quite unlikely that the Prophet (PBUH) would have cursed the delayers as mentioned above.. The changing of his words may have one explanation: to incite hatred between Bani Israel (allegedly called Yahood, delayers) and the followers of Muhammad (PBUH) for pollitical reasons..

Delayers are Doomed

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "You (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Delayers till some of them will hide behind stones. The stones will (betray them) saying, 'O 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! There is a Hodite hiding behind me; so kill him.' " (SB Book #52, Hadith #176)

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Delayers, and the stone behind which a Hodite will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Hodite hiding behind me, so kill him." (SB Book #52, Hadith #177)

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The Delayers will fight with you, and you will be given victory over them so that a stone will say, 'O Muslim! There is a Hodite behind me; kill him!' " (SB Book #56, Hadith #791)

Dajjal

The suspected Dajjal, Ibn Sayyad, was a Delayer. [Tirmidhi 2254, Bukhari 3055, Muslim 2925]

A Delayer child. [Tirmidhi 2255, Ahmed 20440]

Where did the problems begin?

Tafseer Al-Qurtubi; Tafseer Al-Tabari not referring to the tribe of Judah also said that not all Israelites were Delayers. Indeed Hadith (SB Book #53 Hadith #394) makes it clear that it was those who believed that the fire would not touch them except for a certain number of days are the the Delayers i.e. the أميون from among the Bani Israeel (Quran 2:78-80).

???? said that the children of Israel were righteous until the Muwalidun began to increase among them. Muwalidun means that the women they were marrying were not members of Abraham's Household, nor even its followers/believers.

Sunan Al-Darimi 120

Mohamed son of Uyaynah told us that Ali the son of Mas-hir from Hisham the son of Urwah that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal that Urwah ibn al-Zubayr said that the Prophet (BPUH) said: "The children of Israel were still upright and there was nothing wrong in them until grew up among them the Muwalladun, children of the women of other nations which the children of Israel had captured (e.g. Idumeans). From them came speculative opinion and misguidance in theology.

Discussion

The beliefs of those who Delay mentioned in Medina, Khybar and Hijaz in the time of Mahomed (PBUH) are (with the exception of lip-service concerning the Laws of Moses) similar to those ascribed by Maimonides to the proto-Hebrews in the towns where he who became Abraham lived prior to his calling. This "proto-Hebrew" religion was described by Maimonides as a kind of Hermeticism. The fact that the "Delayers" of Khybar who laid some sort of claim to the Laws of Moses indicates that these particular Delayers had once been in some kind of contact with real Jews. In the same way that "Ger Sheker" Heretics from among other Hebrew peoples such as the Amalekites or Idumeans (See Moshe Sharon's entry on People of the Book in the Encyclopedia of the Quran) clearly the tribes of Hijaz, Khaybar, and Medina criticised as being "Delayers" had also come into contact with the Torah and, just like most Christians, decided to ignore it. In fact there are many more similarities between Delayers and certain types of Christian.

Much of what is said about "Delayers" in the Quran and Hadith is compared to the Jewish Gnostic Netzarim (using shrines as places of worship -SB Book #8 Hadith #427, SB Book #56 Hadith #660) or many other religions (e.g. circumcision SB Book #1 Hadith #6 and Delayers keep hands on flanks while praying according to SB Book #56 Hadith #664 and do not dye grey hair SB Book #56 Hadith #668). There is a report concerning a Delayer (يهودي) who respected Moses (SB Book #41 Hadith #594 & #595, SB Book #55 Hadith #620 & #626), as well as one with a curiosity about Moses (SB Book #48 Hadith #849), and indeed Mahomed (PBUH) judges them according to Torah equity (e.g. SB Book #41, Hadith #596, SB Book #51 Hadith #9) but the similarities to Jews are very few and far between (no more than between Christianity and Judaism) and indeed what the Quran does is to highlight the differences, and so it is to explore the differences that this essay is being written.

Distancing them from a superficial similarity to Christianity, the Hoodan (Delay) belief of the يهود (Delayers) of Khybar rejected Gabriel as an enemy (SB Book #55 Hadith #546, SB Book #58 Hadith #275, SB Book #60 Hadith #7) and is doomed for being based around the veneration of عزير (SB Book #93 Hadith #532s, SB Book #60 Hadith #105 and in Quran 9:30, Osiris according to Mohammed Magdi Bey, or a fallen angel according to Arye Olman, AlTabiri says in the opinion of Abdullah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr that it was only Pinhas ben Azarya believed this as the only begotten son of a "hand-fettered" depiction of Allah (Quran 5:64) as if the Quran is wrong to use the plural Delayers. Allegedly it was also Pinhas who said: { إِنَّ اللَّه فَقِير وَنَحْنُ أَغْنِيَاء } "Truly, Allah is indigent and we are rich!"[1])

It is obviously important to note that despite similarity in sound, the Jews (Bani Israeel) are clearly NOT the Delayers. In fact Delayers are extremely vehement against orthodox believers (Quran 5:82) which includes vehemence against those who genuinely follow the laws of Moses such as the Bani Israeel.

???Some Hadith even report that when the Delayers are alone with a believer (even one of the Bani Israeel) they will think about killing the believer{cite}.

Ibn Hazm identified the Delayers as a sect of (Boethusian) Sadducees who worshipped Ezra. Ibn Hazm is also responsible for the development of the doctrine of Tahrif. It might be necessary to re-visit Ibn Hazm's writings to see if this is really what he intended. Certainly the Sadducees denied the resurrection which might have set them in stead for veneration of the immortal Osiris.

In some instances Ibn Hazm's assessment would seem to be true that they were a sect of Sadducees, but in other cases they appear to simple be deviant tribes of Amalekites insincerely converted to Judaism who created a syncretic pagan belief system.

Sahih Bukhari

Having identified from the Quran som ekey elements of the Hoodan belief system which certainly clear the Jews from the charge of being labelled Delayers, it is time now to turn to the Hadith. At least we may be able to gather from the Hadith some more information about the nature of the Hoodan belief system in order to see if some kind of identity emerges for these people.

Hadith (SB Book #53 Hadith #394) says that those who believed that the fire would not touch them except for a certain number of days are the the Delayers i.e. the أميون from among the Bani Israeel (Quran 2:78-80), and ...... not referring to the tribe of Judah also said that not all Israelites were Delayers. In some instances Ibn Hazm's assessment would seem to be true that they were a sect of Sadducees, but in other cases they appear to simple be Ger Sheker tribes of Amalekites insincerely converted to Judaism being "سماعون للكذب أكالون للسحت" i.e. "greedy for illicit gain" (Quran 5:42).

Delayers used to light fires (just like the Sadducees in opposition to the Pharisees) and shofar to announce the times for prayer (SB Book #11 Hadith #577, and SB Book #56 Hadith #663). Jews however do not do this.

The most holy month of the year for Hoodan (Hodite) people is Muharram (Iyyar), because of Ashura 3727 حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ يَصُومُونَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسُئِلُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي أَظْفَرَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ وَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ تَعْظِيمًا لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِصَوْمِهِ (SB Book #31 Hadith #222 SB Book #55 Hadith #609, SB Book #58 Hadith #278, SB Book #60 Hadith #202, SB Book #60 Hadith #261), a day of fasting on the 10th of Muharram to mourn the defeat of the Israelites over Egypt. It is falsely attributed to Mahomed (PBUH) that he adopted this fast from them. Jews however do not know this fast.

Those mentioned in the Holy Quran (3:181) as the people who used to kill their Prophets are according to traditional tafsir considered Delayers along with those guilty of consuming Suht (worst type of unlawful wealth).

Delayers poison their prophets in order to identify them (SB Book #71 Hadith #669). Jews however do not do this.

Delayers believe in the punishment of the grave (SB Book #75 Hadith #377) as do many religions. (Compare with Tirmidhi 24.1006 and 25.1008)

Delayers think nothing of killing believers and take false oaths (SB Book #83 Hadith #37) Jews however consider every human to be in the image of God.

Delayers are not Muslims (SB Book #89 Hadith #302) it might be that the word Delayers was used to describe those who were not capable of Islam.

The Priests (ARABIC NEEDED) of Delayers have made no just estimate of Allah such as due to him (SB Book #93 Hadith #604, SB Book #93 Hadith #510)

Delayers revere politicians (Book #58 Hadith #277) ARABIC NEEDED.

Saturday is the Delayers day of weekly immersion (SB Book #13 Hadith #21, SB Book #56 Hadith #693). However, Friday is the day for weekly immersion among Torah observant Jews.

Sabi-Muslims are in danger of going into the ways of the Delayers (SB Book #56 Hadith #662) but then so are many people.

Delayers believe in part of the scripture and disbelieve in other (Tafsir on Quran 15.90 by Book #60 Hadith #229) typical of a Ger Sheker.

Delayers and Netzarim are the greatest losers in respect to their deeds (Tafsir on Quran 18.103 by SB Book #60 Hadith #252)

Delayers wore Tailsans (SB Book #59 Hadith #519). Jews however do not do this.

Hoodan superstition concerning the origin of a squint (SB Book #60 Hadith #51). Jews however do not have this superstition.

Delayers preceded the Netzarim (SB Book 10 Hadith #533, SB Book #36 Hadith #468, #469, #471, SB Book #56 Hadith #665) as did Amalekitse but they are not Jews.

Delayers lived in Hijaz (SB Book #59 Hadith #371) Medina (SB Book #59 Hadith #362) Bait-ul-Midras (SB Book #53, Hadith #392) and Khaibar (SB Book #36 Hadith #485, SB Book #39 Hadith #524, SB Book #44 Hadith #678, SB Book #52 Hadith #195, SB Book #59 Hadith #510, SB Book #59 Hadith #550) until forced to go to Taima' and Ariha' (SB Book #39 Hadith #531, SB Book #50 Hadith #890, SB Book #53 Hadith #380). Delayers darken the faces of adulterers (SM Book #017 Hadith #4211)

Al-Bara' b. 'Azib reported: There happened to pass by Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) a Hodite blackened and lashed. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) called them (the Delayers) and said: Is this the punishment that you find in your Book (Torah) as a prescribed punishment for adultery? They said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) called one of the scholars amongst them and said: I ask you in the name of Allah Who sent down the Torah on Moses if that is the prescribed punishment for adultery that you find in your Book. He said: No. Had you not asked me in the name of Allah, I would not have given you this information. We find stoning to death (as punishment prescribed in the Torah). But this (crime) became quite common amongst our aristocratic class. So when we caught hold of any rich person (indulging in this offence) we spared him, but when we caught hold of a helpless person we imposed the prescribed punishment upon him. We then said: Let us argree (on a punishment) which we can inflict both upon the rich and the poor. So We decided to blacken the face with coal and flog as a substitute punishment for stoning. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I am the first to revive Thy command when they had made it dead. He then commanded and he (the offender) was stoned to death. Allah, the Majestic and Glorious, sent down (this verse):" O Messenger, (the behaviour of) those who vie with one another in denying the truth should not grieve you..." up to" is vouchsafed unto you, accept it" (v. 41) 2176 It was said (by the Delayers): Go to Muhammad; it he commands you to blacken the face and award flogging (as punishment for adultery), then accept it, but it he gives verdict for stoning, then avoid it. It was (then) that Allah, the Majestic and Great, sent down (these verses):" And they who do not judge in accordance with what Allah has revealed are, indeed, deniers of the truth" (v. 44) ;" And they who do not judge in accordance with what Allah has revealed-they, they indeed are the wrongdoers" (v. 45) ;" And they who do not judge in accordance with what God has revealed-they are the iniquitous (v. 47). (All these verses) were revealed in connection with the non-believers. (SM Book #017 Hadith #4214)

Delayers do black magic SM Book #026 Hadith #5428.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: If ten scholars of the Delayers would follow me, no Hodite would be left upon the surface of the earth who would not embrace Islam. (Book #039, Hadith #6711)

SM Book #026 Hadith #5389 smply cannot be Sahih because it seems to encourage Muslims towards intimidation of Delayers. Unless the meaning of narrow path means the siratul-mustaqim.

Another which seems not Sahih is that Delayers and Netzarim are ransom for Muslims from Hell-fire (SM Book #037 Hadith #6666)

Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: You will fight against the Delayers and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Hodite (hiding himself behind me) ; kill him. (Book #041, Hadith #6981)

Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Delayers will fight against you and you will gain victory over them until the stone would say: Muslim, here is a Hodite behind me; kill him. (Book #041, Hadith #6984)

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Delayers and the Muslims would kill them until the Delayers would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Hodite behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Delayers. (Book #041, Hadith #6985)

Abu Sa'id Khudri reported: Ibn Sa'id said to me somethhing for which I felt ashamed. He said: I can excuse others; but what has gone wrong with you, O Companions of Muhammad, that you take me as Dajjal? Has Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) not said that he would be a Hodite whereas I am a Muslim and he also said that he would not have children, whereas I have children, and he also said: veryly, Allah has prohibited him to enter Mecca whereas I have performed Pilgrimage, atid. he went on saying this that I was about to be impressed by his tallk. He (however) said this also: I know where he (Dajjal) is and I know his father abd I mother, and it was said to him: Won't you feel pleased if you would be the same person? Thereupon he said: If this offer is made to me, I would noT resent that. (Book #041, Hadith #6995)

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Dajjal would be followed by seventy thousand Delayers of Isfahan wearing Persian shawls. (Book #041, Hadith #7034)

Sayyidina Safwan ibn Assal al-Muradi reported that of two Delayers one said to the other, “Come let us go to this Prophet that we may question him.” The other said, “Do not call him a Prophet, for, if he hears you say Prophet he will be overjoyed.’ So they came to him and asked him about the words of Allah the Exalted: "And certainly we gave Musa nine manifest signs." (17:101) He said that they were: (1) Associate nothing with Allah, (2) Do not commit fornication, (3) Do not unjustly take the life of one whose killing has been forbidden by Allah, (4) Do not steal, (5) Do not practice magic, (6) Do not take an innocent to the king with false charges) that he might execute him, (7) Do not devour interest, (8) Do not accuse a chaste woman falsely of fornication, (9) And, do not desert the battlefield. Shu’bah was unsure if this was included: And particularly for you, O Delayers, that you do not contravene (the injunctions on) the Sabbath (Saturday). So, they kissed his hand and his feet, saying, “We bear testimony that you are a Prophet. He asked. ‘Then what prevents you from submitting (in Isaim)?” They said, ‘Dawood had prayed that Prophets should not cease to come in his offspring and we fear that if we submit the Delayers will kill us.’ [Ahmed 18814]

Chapter 33 (2742) Delayers transgress Sabbath

Sayyidina Saf wan ibn Assal (RA) reported that a Delayer said to his friend that he should accompany him to the Prophet (SAW) His friend said, “Do not call him a Prophet (SAW) because if he hears that, he would be overjoyed.” They met the Prophet (SAW) and asked him about the nine clear signs. So, he said, to them (that they are): Do not associate anything with Allah, Do not steal Do not kill anyone whom Allah has made sacred except when that is rightful Do not take an innocent man to the ruler that he may slay him. Do not practice magic. Do not devour interest. Do not accuse an innocent woman of indecency. Do not flee on the day of the battle. And particularly for you, O Delayers do not transgress in the matter of Sabath (sabt).” They kissed his hands and his feet and said, “We bear witness that you are a Prophet.” He asked. “Then what pervents you from following me”? They said, “Dawood had prayed that Prophets should not cease to come from his progeny and we fear that if we follow you then the Delayers will kill us.” [Nisai 4089, Ibn e Majah 3705,Ahmed 18114]

Chapter 41 (2808) Delayers have untidy courtyards.

Salih ibn Abu Hassan reported having heard Sa’eed ibn Musayyiab say, “Indeed Allah is Pure. He loves the pure. He is Clean and loves cleanliness. He is Generous and loves generosity. He is Benevolent and loves benevolence. So, keep yourselves clean and tidy.” The narrator thought that he also said, “Keep your courtyards clean and do not imitate the Delayers.” Salih said that he mentioned that to Muhajir ibn Masmar and he said “A hadith was narrated to me by Aamir ibn Sa’d from his father, from the Prophet (SAW) of like manner except that he did not say, “I think,” but orly “Keep your courtyards clean.”

Chapter 7 (2880) Delayers preceded Netzarim

Sayyidina Ibn Umar (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: ‘Indeed, your appointed time relative to the people who have passed away is like between the salah of asr and the setting of the sun. And, your example relative to the Delayers and Netzarim is like a man who hired many labourers asking, “Who will work for me till afternoon against a qirat.” The Delayers worked against one qirat. Then he asked, “Who will work for me from afternoon on against a qirat”? The Netzarim worked against one qirat. Then you work from the salah of Asr to the setting of the sun against two qirats. So, the Delayers and the Netzarim became angry and said, “We work more but are paid less.” He asked “Have I wornged you and denied anything of your right”? They said, “No.” He said, “This is my favour. I grant it to whom I will.” [Ahmed 5909,Bukhari 557]

Chapter 2 (2963)

Adi ibn Hatim (RA) narrated I came to Allah’s Messenger (SAW) while he was sitting in the mosque. The people introduced me, “This is Adi ibri Hatim.” I had come without anyone’s protection or guarantee. When I was presented to him, he held me by ny hand and he had already said : (to his sahabah), “I hope that Allah will give his hand in mine.” Then he stood up with me. A woman who had a child with her met him. They said, “We have a petition for you.” He stood with them till he had disposed of their petition. Then he held my hand till he took me to his home. A young girl spread out a mat for him and he sat on it while I sat by him. He praised and glorified Allah and asked me what made me run away from saying “Do you know of any God besides Allah?” I said, “No.” Then he talked for some time and asked. “What makes you runaway from saying (Allah is the Greatest)? Do you know of anything greater than Allah?” I said, “No.’ He said, ‘The Delayers are the ones on whom is the wrath while the Netzarim have gone astray.” I interrupted. “But, I am an upright Muslim !” I observed his face glow with pleasure. Then he instructed me and I lodged at (the house of) an Ansar man and visited him (the Prophet (SAW) ) at the two ends of the day. One evening, while I was with him, some people came to him. They wore woollen striped garments. He offered salah and stood up and motivated them to pay sadaqah. He said: (Give) even a sa’, or half a sa’, or a handful, or a part of it - and, so let each of you protect his face from the heat of Hell or the Fire itself, even a piece of date, or a part of it. Each of you is to meet Allah and it will be said to him - what I say to you now - ‘Did I not give you wealth and children?’ He will say, ‘Certainly (you did).’ He will ask, ‘Where is that which you ought to have sent forward for yourself?’ He will look for it in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, but find nothing with which he might save his face from the heat of Hell. Each of you must protect his face from the Fire even with half-a-date, and if he does not find it then with a good word. I do not fear over you hunger, for, Allah is your Help and Support and Bestower till a solitary woman travels between Yathrib (Madinah) and Hirah, not fearing loss of her animal to highwaymen.” I said to myself. “Where are the robbers of Tayyi?” [Ahmed 19398)

(2964)

Muhammad ibn Muthanna and Muhammad ibn Bashaar reported from Muhammad ibn Ja’far, from Shi’bah, from Simak ibn Harb, from Abb’ad ibn Hubaysh, from Adi ibn Hatim, from the Prophet (SAW) that he said, “The Delayers are they on whom is (Allah’s) wrath and the Netzarim have gone astray.” And he mentioned the hadith in its entire length.

Chapter 14 (3128) Delayers believe the following stories about Angels (while Jews don't).

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that some Delayers came to the Prophet (SAW) and said, “O Abul Qasim!Tell us about al-Ra’d (The Thunder) what is it?” He said, “He is an angle among angels appointed over the clouds. He holds a whip of fire with which he drives the clouds to whatever Allah wills.” They asked, “What is this sound that we hear?” He said, “This is his urging the clouds when he drives them till they end up where they are commanded to go.” They said “You speak the truth.” And they asked, “What had Isra’il forbidden himself?” He said, “He complained of sciatica and he did not find anything comforting him except the flesh of camel and camel milk. So, hed forbid himself these things.” They said, “You speak the truth.”

Chapter 18 (3151)

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Quraysh requested the Delayers, Teach us something about which we may ask this man.’ They said, Ask him about the spirit (Ruh).” So, Allah, the Exalted, revealed:" And they ask you concerning the spirit Say "The Spirit is by the command of my Lord and you have not been given of knowledge except a little." (17: 85) They said, “We have been given plenty of knowledge. Indeed, we are given the Torah and he who is given the Torah is given much good.” So, this verse was revealed: "Say, 'If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would certainly be exhausted before the words of my Lord are exhausted - though we brought the like of it for support." (18: 109)

Sayyidina Abdullah (RA) reported that a Delayer came to the Prophet and said, "O Muhammad, Allah will carry the heavens on a finger, mountains on a finger, the earths on a finger, and the (rest of the) creation on a finger. Then He will say: I am the King.” The Prophet laughed till his premolar teeth were visible and he recited: "And they esteem not Allah with the true esteem." (39 :67) [Ahmed 4368, 4811, Muslim 1786]

Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah reported that, in the market of Madinah, a Delayer said, “By Him Who chose Musa over all human beings....” A man of the Ansar raised his hand and slapped the Delayer’s face with it, saying, “You (dare to) say that while Allah’s Prophet is amongst us?” (Both of them came to the Prophet (SAW) So, Allah’s Messenger (SAW) recited: "And the trumpet shall be blown, so all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth shall swoon, except whom Allah will. Then it shall be blown again, behold, they shall stand beholding."(39: 68) (He said) “I will be the first one who raises his head and, behold, Musa will be holding a pillar of the pillars of the Throne. And I cannot say whether he will raise his head before me or be among those whom Allah has exempted.O And he who says that I am better than Yunus ibn Mata has indeed lied.” [Ahmed 9828, Bukhari 2411, Ibn e Majah 4274, Muslim 2373, Abu Dawud 4671]

2.109 - 2.118

Many of the People of Apocrypha long to make you disbelievers after your belief through envy on their identity's account after the truth hath become manifest unto them Forgive and be indulgent until The DIVINE give command. Lo! The DIVINE is Able to do all things. Establish communion and pay the poor-due For whatever of good ye send before (you) for your Nafs ye will find it with The DIVINE. Lo! The DIVINE is Seer of what ye do. Though they say: None entereth Paradise unless he be Delayers or Netzarim These are their own desires; Say (O Ye Orthodox): Bring your proof if ye are loyal. Nay but whosoever dedicates his purpose to DIVINE while doing good his reward is with his MASTER and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. Though the Delayers say the Netzarim follow nothing and the Netzarim say the Delayers follow nothing -while both are readers of Apocrypha!- even thus speak those who know not! The DIVINE will decide between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they differ. And who doth greater wrong than he who forbiddeth the approach to the sanctuaries of The DIVINE lest should mention of HE be called therein? and who striveth for their ruin? As for such it was never meant that they should enter them except in fear. Theirs in the world is ignominy and theirs in the Hereafter is an awful doom. Unto DIVINE belong the East and the West and whithersoever ye turn there is The DIVINE's countenance Lo! The DIVINE is All-Embracing All-Knowing. Though they (Delayers & Netzarim) say: "The DIVINE made a progeny be it glorified!" Nay, The DIVINE's is WHATSOEVER is in the heavens and the earth. ALL are subservient unto HIM! The Originator of the heavens and the earth! When He decreeth a thing He saith unto it only: Be! and it is. And those who have no knowledge say: Why doth not The DIVINE speak unto us or some sign come unto us? Even thus as they now speak spoke those before them Their hearts are all alike WE (Sifatullah) have made clear the revelations for people who are sure.

In contrast to this, Jewish religion is not from the same root and certainly do not say that no one will enter paradise unless one follows Judaism. Indeed anyone who keeps the deen of Noah is regarded as saved according to Judaism. Moreover, Jews do not say that the Netzarim follow nothing, and Jews do not believe that God has made a glorified progeny.

2.120

Though the Delayers will not be pleased with Thee (O Mursal) nor will the Netzarim till Thou follow their creed Say: Lo! the-guidance of The DIVINE is guidance! But if Thou shouldst follow their desires after the knowledge which hath come unto Thee then wouldst Thou have from The DIVINE no ally nor helper.

In contrast to this, Jews do not require people to become Jews as long as they are on the Deen of Noah.

2.135

Though they say: "Be Delayers or Netzarim then ye will be rightly guided" Say (unto them O Israel): Nay but The Malha of Abraham Hanifa and he was not of the polytheists.

Again the religion of the Delayers has nothing to do with Jews, and if Judaism is meant then it does not preach such a thing. For Jews, as long as one is on the Deen of Noah then one is rightly guided.

2.140

Or say ye that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes were Delayers or Netzarim?

Judaism does not teach that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac and Jacob were Hoodan nor Netzarim, nor Jews. Monotheists yes, but not Jews.

3.67

Abraham was not an Delayer nor yet a Nasranian but he was a Hanifa a Muslim and he was not of the polytheists.

Jews do not teach that Abraham was a "Yahūdian".

5:18

The Delayers and the Netzarim say: we are children of The DIVINE and its beloveds.

In contrast, Jews believe that all people are created in God's image.

5.51

O Ye Orthodox! Take not The Delayers and the Netzarim for allies They are allies one to another s/he among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them Lo! The DIVINE guides not wrong-doing folk.

Jews are not allied to Netzarim, and simply being in alliance with the Jews is certainly not enough to make one into a Jew.

5.64

The Delayers say: The DIVINE's hand is fettered.

There is even criticism in the Mishnah concerning people who say such a thing. Jews believe God is omnipotent.

5.82

Thou wilt find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe (to be) the Delayers and the Polytheists and thou wilt find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe (to be) those who say: Lo! we are Netzarim...

In contrast, Jews have very good things to say about Islam. The war between Israel and Palestine is not a war against Muslims. Indeed if all the People in Palestine started to behave like Muslims tomorrow then the war would be over, and many Jews would even opt to be under the Islamic rule than under the secular state of Israel. If anything the description Netzarim in this verse at least fits better with Jews than the description of the Delayers.

9.30 - 31

Though the Delayers say: "`Azir son of The DIVINE" and the Netzarim say: "The Anointed son of The DIVINE" That is their saying with their mouths They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old The DIVINE (itself) condemns them How perverse are they! They have taken their wizards and their Rehaban as lords beside The DIVINE and Almasih inb Maryam. but he didn't command them except that they serve only One Eloah, there is no Eloah save HIM Be HE glorified from all that they ascribe as partner!

This is the clearest description of the Delayers in the Quran, again (as in 2.109-2.118) it re-iterates that they are guilty of ascribing partners unto The DIVINE and names the object of their veneration as `Azir. Whoever these Delayers are it is absolutely clear from the Quran alone that they simply can not be educated Torah observant orthodox Jews. Moreover it identifies them as taking wizards as their lords. Much debate has raged over the identity of 'Azir, some say he is Ezra, but this hardly fits the context. It is much more likely that his is the green man, Osiris, venerated among the practitioners of witchcraft.

This ends the discussion of the Delayers in the Quran.

Osiris

Conclusion

Having looked with all due diligence into the identity of the original Delayers mentioned in the Quran, we can be absolutely certain that the term does not refer to any practitioners of any form of normative Judaism, unless the definition of Judaism is expanded to include Christianity, which will not likely come to pass. No, but just as Christianity has taken much from Judaism the same can be said about the religion of the Delayers mentioned in the Quran. It may be that this inheritance comes from the fact that just as many of the early Christians, many of the Delayers could have been patrilineal descendants of Jacob whose gentile (e.g. Idumean) mothers were not interested in the Torah and instead introduced them to gentile practices. Thus the Quran describes them as Gentiles from among those of the children of Israel whose hearts are hardened (Quran 2.74-78).

It is beyond doubt that one of the key pillars of the non-Jewish Syncretism adhered to by the particular Delayers in question is the worship of Uzayr as son of Allah (as reported by Tabiri concerning the four sages who came to Muhammad PBUH). It may certainly be argued that the identification of Uzayr is not important, but since there is such a conflict between the Delayers and the Netzarim it might be worthwhile considering the conflict between the Astrotheologians on whether a story about a messenger written in the book of nature is concerning the Messiah or concerning Osiris. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eetLnLgrDko&feature=channel_video_title
